In January 2001, I worked in Mult-user DMS group. That time, I met the most horrible manager I ever met. Jen Lewis was a task manager in P1. After I shown to try to leave DMS group and wanted to work for Waseem Naqvi, Jen started to give me hard time. Whenever I argued with Belinda (the group leader) about some technical issure, Jen always stepped on me, it was very easy to step on me, because in this group, Gayle, Shari have treated me not fair for long time. In their mind, not fair to me is fare, but if I try to argue with them, it would be not fair(Freedom is slavery?). There is a typical example here, Gayle created an action item in my code review ( funny thing is that Gayle does not understand code), this action item asked me to re-write a part of my code for better readability (to who?). But my code was optimized, so I swapped the IF part and ELSE part to let the action item go. But Belinda was not satisfy my fixing, she re-modified the code in different way, and I found the modified code was not as good as the original, so I send email to ask the group members to discuss, which caused Jen, Gayle, Shari were angry with me (How dare a Chinese showed the truth to everyone?). Jen set a lunch team meeting, she expected that the team members should support the leader, but Ian, Conall and William supported me. Then Jen asked them out of the meeting room, left Belinda, Shari, Jen and me in meeting, three to one, that time, Jen showed me her true color, jen declared in might voice to me “Yon send email to group members to ATTACK Belinda! It is not fair to Belinda…” How scary it was, I never met a manager who is able to promote a technical discussion t be a politic attacking, and I never met a manager who holds might power to allege a criminal behavior to me, at the time, even Belinda was shock, but Shari was so enjoy to watch how Jen Lewis was ‘bullying’ me. And I asked to let Waseem or Mark Edry to judge my code, Jen and Shari refused, Jen said that Belinda’s the leader, she has right to do what she wants. This so called attacking email effected my performance review, at beginning of 2002, when my section manager Anne Selwyn did annual
performance review for me, there was a line says “disrespect the group leader when working in DMS”. I told the true story to Anne, and I told Anne that I should ask Jen Lewis to make apologize to me. Anne said that Jen will become a very high level person in Raytheon, if I ask her apologize, I would make an enemy. So what is fair to a low level person?
P.S. I saved the so-called attacking Belinda email. I saved the email Gayle sent me to blame me did not give Kathy a good training.
